Liberty Tree Initiative, JEM, SPJ Sponsor First Amendment Program

The School of Journalism and Electronic Media, along with the Liberty Tree Initiative and the East Tennessee chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, are organizing a spring First Amendment Program which will run from March 21 to April 25.

March 21-25 is First Amendment Week.  You can visit the First Amendment table in the UT John C. Hodges Library for information about First Amendment issues and prizes.

March 28-April 1, the Banned Books & Newspaper Exhibit will be featured in the John C. Hodges Library.  

JEM Director Dr. Peter Gross and Interim Dean of UT Libraries Dr. Linda L. Phillips will introduce the exhibit on March 28 at 2 p.m. in the library's main entrance.

April 4 will feature a panel entitled WikiLeaks, the First Amendment, and the Espionage Act at 7 p.m. in the College of Communication and Information Auditorium.

The panel will consist of Dr. Otis Stephens, Alumni Distinguished Service Professor of Political Science and renowned First Amendment scholar, JEM Professor Dr. Dwight Teeter, JEM Professor Dr. Ben Bates, JEM Assistant Professor Dr. Maria Fontenot, and Glenn Reynolds from the UT College of Law and Instapundit.

On April 11, there will be a viewing of "Good Night & Good Luck" in the CCI Auditorium at 7 p.m.

April 25 is the "Going Online" Workshop for high school journalism teachers.

The workshop will feature a discussion of First Amendment issues with JEM Professor Dr. James Stovall and Dean of the UT College of Law Douglas Blaze.

April 29 will feature the Inauguration of the First Amendment Kiosk in the Scripps Convergence Lab at 3 p.m.  [**UPDATED**]

Guest speakers at the inauguration will include Gene Policinski from the First Amendment Center at Vanderbilt University.
